Garifuna Day in Guatemala

History

On November 26, 1802, Marcus Sanchez Diaz led a group of Garifuna people from Honduras and founded the town of Labuga, Livingston at the mouth of the Rio Dulce in the state of Izabal, Guatemala.

Garifuna Day in Guatemala

November 26 is celebrated as Garifuna Day in Guatemala as established by decree number 83- 96 in 1996. It commemorates the settlement of Garifuna people in Guatemala. According to the decree, whereas among the various ethnic groups that inhabit Guatemala is the Garifuna community, which has its own cultural identity according to its values.
