Garifuna Settlement Day in Belize

History 
On November 19, 1823 - Alejo Beni, led a small band of Garinagu men, women, and children up the coast from Honduras to British Honduras (Belize). Arriving in the shores of Stann Creek (Dangriga) in British Honduras (Belize)h 

The first Garifuna holiday in history!  
On November 19,1941 Thomas Vincent Ramos launched  Carib Disembarkation Day, in Stann Creek District, to celebrate the arrival of the Garinagu to the shores of Belize in 1832. In 1942 this observance spread to Hopkins, Seine Beight, Punta Gorda and Barranco. In 1943, it became  a public holiday in Stann Creek District and the Toledo District in 1944. 

 In 1977, the holiday was renamed Garifuna Settlement Day and became a national Public and Bank Holiday in Belize. The holiday represents the inclusion of the Garinagu into Belize's social fabric and recognizes their contribution to Belize society and to the diversity of Belizean people
