Notable Garifuna Figures

Sara is a proud first-generation Garifuna American native Bronxite, she is a proud mother of two and grandmother as well. The daughter of immigrant parents who were born in Santa Rosa de Aguan, Honduras. As a child in the 70’s she remembers attending one of the first Traditional Garifuna Fedu in the Bronx, with Dona Locha as lead vocalist in Dona Emma’s basement.

Her parents often visited Honduras, so family tradition was never lost. As an adult she has worked for a well-known hospital for over 30 years. She was also part of Community Board 6 in the Bronx which covers the Tremont West Farms area, where she chaired the Housing and Land Use committee which approved over 2,000 affordable housing units. She is currently President of Patronato Santa Rosa de Aquan in New York. 

She is also currently a member of Garifuna Coalition and Treasurer of Friends of Crotona Park.
